About 68 per cent rural women cannot afford sanitary napkins available in the market, according to a survey.
Why we do it
Love, warmth, care. Its endless if you go down listing the traits of a conventional Indian woman, but there is a sad part of it that she forgets her own needs in the vast concerns for her family. Her health has taken a toll. Of the 355 million reproductive-age women in India, only 12 percent use absorbent pads or another sanitary method to stem the blood flow during their periods, a report by AC Nielsen and Plan India found in 2010. The rest tend to rely on old fabric, husks, dried leaves and grass, ash, sand or newspapers. This land where a woman is treated equivalent to God accounts 27 percent of the deaths due to cervical cancer and all these numbers are just courtesy the fact we don’t wish to talk about the taboo and neither evolve a solution to it. So we decided to talk and not just that, propose a solution.
What we do
Sales of sanitary protection products in India reached $236 million last year and that number will probably only swell to $442 million by 2017, according to London-based researcher Euromonitor International. That compares with a projection of $13.2 billion that year for China, which according to the United Nations has 42 million more women. India doesn’t lack products in the domain but these have never been above business. So we came up with a model of a congregation of entrepreneurship and social impact. Titli, targets the affordability and accessibility of sanitary napkins. Keeping in mind the demography of India, our entrepreneurs provide low cost sanitary napkins at doorstep.
How we do it
Having entrepreneurship at the core of Titli, we have manufacturing units that have a capability of 7000 sanitary napkins employing 4 entrepreneurs with minimal skills. For a wide and deep outreach of the product, our sale representatives get a part of the total cost as an incentive to deliver the product at doorstep. Despite being a cheaper alternative, the product is better than the higher priced opponents and uses gel technology for better absorption and is biodegradables at the same time. We are soon rolling out our own sanitary napkins production machine, that would apparently be the most efficient in India.
Our model is generating a regular employment for women. Since the whole production unit would be run by them therefore with time they would learn the skills of marketing, manufacturing and selling. This would eventually make them confident, independent and true entrepreneurs.
Since our napkins are biodegradable hence it is definitely a better alternative to the market product in terms of being environment friendly.
The revenue is generated from the sales of the sanitary napkins which is a reliable source of income for women entrepreneurs. Apart from the entrepreneurs, the other women of the community are being made available a very affordable sanitary napkin .
